How to Regulate Your Emotions

When you think of emotions, what do you think of? For many it’s usually either the “high high’s” or the “low low’s” on the spectrum of how one feels. To start, let’s label some basic emotions:

  1. Happiness
  2. Sadness
  3. Anger
  4. Fear
  5. Loneliness
  6. Jealousy
  7. Disgust

For most people, we can experience these emotions without them affecting our daily functioning. Some of us may feel lonely or sad for a period of time but they have the skills and ability to regulate their emotions toward a more positive space. However, for some of us, it is not as easy. Anger or sadness can spiral for days or even weeks. It can feel never ending. Without the appropriate tools, and (sometimes the appropriate medication,) our emotions control us versus the other way around. If you feel that your emotions have gotten the best of you lately and you’d like to get back in the driver’s seat, please feel free to reach out to me. I’d be happy to work with you to create a comprehensive plan of coping skills for you.
